Last Sunday night we looked at the inward dynamics of the Holy Spirit. Jesus made the bold statement shortly before he died that it was to their advantage that he leave, because he would be sending the Holy Spirit. Last week we looked at why that was the case. Here is a link to the handout that was given. As well, if you want to do further study on the role that the Spirit plays in our lives and in our church, I suggest you spend some time going through these Scripture passages. You can listen to last week’s talk here.

I had the privilege of sharing last night in our series on the Life of Jesus. It was the first of a two part message called “Pause and Play” looking at the things Jesus chose to do and not to do during his life.

Last night we focused on the things Jesus chose not to do, specifically looking at when he was resisting the temptations of the devil as recorded in Matthew 4. The premise, thoughts, and lay out of this message came from what I learned from Andy Stanley teaching on this same text in a four part series called “Pause”.

Below are some notes from the message. They may not make complete sense with out having heard the teaching. Hear the talk on-line here.

The three types of temptations Jesus faced are the same types of temptations all of our temptations can be categorized in.

- Meet a legitimate need in an illegitimate way. (Ch4 v.3)
- Use God to try to accomplish your own ends. (Ch4 v.6)
- To do the right thing, at the wrong time, in the wrong way. (Ch4 v.9)

We also practiced talking to temptation when we are tempted.

“Temptation….
You will not steal my Future.
You will not steal my Family.
You will not steal my Faith.”

And you really had to be there to enjoy this photo. This is a gift to those who were.

After last night’s worship time, I wanted to share some resources to help you experience the presence of God on a daily basis. Here are several things I’ve found to be helpful.

I believe that carving out space for Bible reading is extremely important. That’s why we’ve spent the last few months going through the Bible reading plan. So too is prayer. The ACTS prayer pattern (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) that was mentioned last might be helpful to you with this. Understanding and believing that you can talk to God any time and any place is pretty remarkable, and will change your life if you live out that reality. Put these two together and you have Scripture meditation, or something like the Lectio Divina exercise that Mandy led us in last night.

And then there’s music. Music plays a big role in a lot of our lives. We can tell you where we first heard our favorite songs; what we were doing and the meaning it’s had in our lives. I’m no different when it comes to this. Worship music has also played a big role in my life. There are some days when I’m driving to work when my soul needs more than talk radio (OK, just about everyday my soul needs more than talk radio).

If you don’t own any music that stirs your soul to worship God, I’ve created a Spotify playlist that will get you started. Enjoy!

Kutrell is currently pursuing a family. He desires adoption and is seeking and hoping for a family here in Memphis.

Kuttrell is an extremely bright child. He has so much untapped potential that needs to be developed. Kuttrell gets along well with his peers and is always very helpful. This affectionate teen would benefit from a one or two- parent home, although he would prefer a family with a mother figure. Kuttrell has a brother living in the Memphis area with whom he would like to remain in contact after the adoption. Kuttrell will also benefit from a family who will continue to take him to counseling.

Here is how Kutrell describes himself:

“I am a smart honor roll student. I enjoy playing basketball and would like to play on a school or community basketball team. I would like a one or two-parent home that will accept me for who I am and love me forever. I would like a home that has other children who live there—they can be younger or older than me. I would love for my family to have some dogs that I can help take care of.”

Please help us share Kutrell’s need. He has asked us to help him spread the word about his desire.

You can post this link on Facebook, Twitter, etc.
